One of these mornings bright and fair

I’m gwine take my wings and try the air.”

And when he died, it was Jim and Randall Ware who dug his grave and begged the army preacher to read the Bible and pray and say a few words over him. He would be buried here in the winter camp of the Union Army.

“How old do you think he is?” the army preacher asked Jim and Randall Ware, but they shook their heads.

“I reckon he might be nigh on to a hundred,” said Randall Ware. “My wife, Vyry, said he was a grown man when her Maw died, and now she’s a grown woman. Ever since she can remember he was an old man.”

“That’s funny,” said Jim, “but he never seemed old to me.”

“That’s cause he could get around so spry and he walked so many far places.”

“He was a good man.”

Randall Ware said to Jim, “You know I coulda gone East with General Grant. They need blacksmiths all over in this war.”

“Yeah, but I reckon I knows why you didn’t”

“Why?”

“Well, some of these days Mister Sherman gonna cut loose through Georgia, and I reckon you’d rather follow him.”

Randall Ware grinned. “Yeah, I got me a shop and a grist mill, a anvil waiting for just my own individual hand.”

“Yeah, and them babies what Vyry’s got down there waiting for you, hanh?”

“Yeah, and them babies.”
